The Transportation Advisory Committee is pleased to announce the forthcoming installation of our second Pedestrian Crossing Beacon/Signalization at the intersection of Kingston Land and Stanley Ave. The intersection is directly adjacent to the Township’s Library. The installation was only possible with the consent of Township Council and is another example of the Committee’s commitment to pedestrian safety.
Our initial project, a mid block crosswalk signalization and striping was completed at Beekman Rd. This ‘test site’ was chosen due to its proximity to Veterans Park and the Beekman Manor residential community (over 300 homes). It has proven to be highly effective in mitigating the concerns of the local residents and their access to the Park. Councilman Joe Camarota commented that “the Council was ecstatic over the success of this program. We have all been contacted by local residents to express their extreme satisfaction with the ease of now crossing the street to and from the Park”.
Intersection and mid-block crossings have the potential to be very dangerous, especially in high pedestrian traffic area’s. This is compounded when the design of the road limits the visibility of drivers and their lines of sight. With traditional signage proven not to be effective, these systems have alleviated the concern of pedestrians, in particular children, by providing a highly visible and ‘live’ warning to drivers to slow down and stop for them. The Township Council and Transportation Advisory Committee are in the process of identifying other area’s of pedestrian crossing concerns as they look to expand this program throughout South Brunswick.
